The Cathedral of Mallorca is illuminated once again for one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year: the Festival of Light. This natural spectacle, also known as the “Vuit de la Seu” – the Cathedral’s eight – takes place only twice a year… and the next date is on Monday 11 November! Coinciding with the feast of St. Martin, the biannual event captivates attendees with an unparalleled play of lights, projecting a perfect “eight” inside the temple.
This visual phenomenon is created when the sun passes through the 1,115 coloured glass panes of the majestic Gothic-style building’s main rose window, projecting its reflection onto the opposite rose window and forming a figure that symbolises eternity in Christianity. For all those who want to experience this architectural wonder, the Cathedral will open its doors at 7:30 am, with free admission and limited capacity, so it is advisable to arrive early.
What makes the Festival of Light unique?
This unique play of lights in Europe is no coincidence. Its origin is due to the structure and millimetric orientation of the Cathedral, the result of centuries of history and restorations. The large rose window, 11.85 metres in diameter, and its alignment with the axis of the central nave allow this effect to occur only on specific dates of the year, creating a magical experience.
For those unable to attend in person, the Cathedral of Mallorca will stream the event through its YouTube channel, so that no one misses out on this experience. If you still have any doubts about the beauty of the “Vuit de la Seu”, you can watch the last live broadcast in February 2024.
