Did you know that there are different traditions around Father’s Day? It is not celebrated in all countries on the same day. Nor does it correspond to the religious celebration of the feast day of St. Joseph, the father of Jesus. In the United States, for example, the great tribute to fathers takes place on the third Sunday in June and it was Sonora Smart Dodd who was the driving force behind this special day in the early 20th century. Smart’s great admiration for her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and exemplary caregiver to the six children he had – he was widowed after his wife died in childbirth – led Smart to establish Father’s Day to honour fatherhood and its positive influence on society. So it was that from 1910 onwards, celebrations and gifts as a sign of gratitude to parents began.
