“Mallorca possesses the legacy of centuries of Mediterranean cultures that must be preserved so it is always a place where one can dream and play guitar”. These are a few words that the legendary guitarist, Paco de Lucía, left us as his legacy. His character, closely linked to the island of Mallorca, returns to Palma once more during the first week of March to bring us the best in flamenco music.
For the second year running, and following the huge success of the first edition, Palma is hosting the Paco de Lucía Festival between the 1st and the 5th of March, a stand-out musical event that is sponsored on this occasion by Nivia Born Boutique Hotel, a declaration of our firm commitment to promoting culture on the island.
For a few days, song, handclapping, the box drum, castanets, guitars, and heel-clicking will have the city vibrating thanks to the great stars of the flamenco scene that have followed in the footsteps of the incomparable maestro of flamenco. Talented young stars on the current musical scene will take to the stage to delight us with their innovative, refreshing style and excellent quality performance.
An intensely artistic and emotional programme
Estrella Morente will oversee the inauguration of the festival at the Teatre Principal de Palma on the 1st of March at 8 p.m. The renowned “cantaora” will be presenting her new album “Leo”, in which she pays homage in a very basic, instinctive way, to all those women who have influenced her.
Antonio Sánchez, guitarist, and Paco de Lucía’s nephew, will play his guitar at the Superior Music Conservatory on the 2nd of March at 8 p.m. In this gala homage, Sánchez includes a first part dedicated to his new album, and the second part is dedicated to a repertory of songs by Paco de Lucía, that he will perform alongside the Municipal Musical Band of Palma (SimfoVents Palma).
Song will give way to the graceful movements of one of the most internationally renowned Spanish dance artists, Rocío Molina, at the Xesc Forteza Municipal Theatre on the 3rd of March at 8 p.m. The “bailaora” from Malaga will exhibit her strength and versatility accompanied by the guitars of Yerai Cortés and Eduardo Trassierra.
Saturday, 4th of March at 8 p.m. will be the turn of Rocío Márquez, who the press refer to as “the voice of the new generation of flamenco song”. Together with Bronquio, we’ll hear how she experiments with flamenco and electronic music in themes from her new album “Tercer cielo”.
The cantaor from Chiclana, Alonso Núñez (“Rancapino Chico”) will bring the Paco de Lucía Festival in Mallorca to a close, enriching Palma’s cultural life for certain. Núñez will be presenting his new show “Past, present and future” for the first time.
In addition to the concerts, the programme of the 2nd edition of the Paco de Lucía Festival, with a charitable nature, will include parallel activities such as the photographic documentary exhibition, “Agua”, by photographer Lola Álvarez, at the CaixaForum; the projection of a 90-minute documentary about the life and work of Paco de Lucía; a session called “I-CorDes. Instituto de Corpologías Deslocalizadas” and a box drum workshop led by Benji Habichuela.
