International Museum Day has been celebrated every 18 May since 1977, and 2024 was to be no exception. This day is a call to appreciate our rich artistic and cultural heritage, which in Palma is unquestionable, and it will be celebrated with open days at some of the main museums, concerts, guided tours, workshops and much more.
If you are ready to be surprised and at the same time learn while enjoying yourself, you can’t miss the International Museum Day proposed by the capital of Palma. Below you will find an ‘appetiser’ of the scheduled activities:
Museum of Mallorca
Its permanent collection, with precious works of archaeology and art, will take you on a journey through the history of Mallorca, from prehistoric times to the 20th century during an interesting open day scheduled for Saturday 18 May.
Maritime Museum of Mallorca
The Misericòrdia Cultural Centre will host the exhibition De la mar a la taula (From the Sea to the Table) this week, during which you can also enjoy a conference entitled “Exploring food heritage from an anthropological perspective”. In addition, the Museu Marítim de Mallorca has organised a visit to the Sa Creu lighthouse in Port de Sóller on 18 May (registration required), as well as children’s workshops at the Museu de la Mar in Port de Sóller.
Es Baluard Museum
At the Plaça de la Porta de Santa Catalina you have an unmissable date with contemporary art. The museum will open its doors free of charge between 10am and 8pm and has designed two exciting activities for families: L’art en mans dels infants (Art in the Hands of Children), for children up to 6 years old, and L’art de l’escolta (The Art of Listening), for children of 7 years old and over.
