For this reason, and given its quality, we could not miss the opening of the Katja Meirowsky exhibition. The Red Action and the Membrane, scheduled for Thursday 30 May in Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani.
Katja Meirowsky (Straussdorf, 1920 – Potsdam, 2012), a key figure in the post-war art scene, left an indelible mark on the history of modern art, even if critics had not always given her the attention she deserved. With Russian and Italian roots, Meirowsky lived a challenging life in which she always showed great courage. Her involvement in the anti-Nazi resistance and subsequent flight to Poland, before returning to Berlin in 1945, helped forge her unique determination and style.
In 1949, Meirowsky and other artists founded the cabaret Die Badewanne in Berlin, a space for multidisciplinary creativity that questioned the conventions of its time. Later, in 1952, she moved to Eivissa, where she found the inspiration and freedom she needed to develop her artistic voice.
Self-identity
Her work, marked by an elegant and delicate abstraction, went against the prevailing artistic currents of her era. Through muted colours and distilled forms, Meirowsky created compositions that invite us to think carefully about human nature and our surrounding environment.
The exhibition, carefully organised by Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani, welcomes visitors until 25 August and exhibits an exceptional collection of her paintings in the custody of Marianne and Reinhard Lippeck in Potsdam.
