Still reeling from the excitement of attending Art Palma Summer on 6 June, one of the most prominent art events that brings together hundreds of onlookers and professionals in the main galleries of Palma and other emblematic spaces in the city, we at Nivia Born Boutique Hotel would like to join in the commemoration of World Modernism Day, held every year on 10 June for one simple reason: the day coincides with the anniversary of the deaths of two key architects of this movement, Antoni Gaudí and Ödön Lechner.
At Nivia Born Boutique Hotel we are proud to pay homage to the splendour of modernism, very much present in our charming facilities. The 10th of June is the perfect excuse to commemorate a movement that revolutionised art, architecture and design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and that has inspired us from the very beginning.
As you may well know, modernism is known for its organic forms, ornamental details and a deep love of nature and craftsmanship. This timeless style has left its mark on every corner of our hotel; from the façade to the intricate detail in our furnishings. In our restaurant The Lounge or in our sophisticated rooms, you will live a unique experience that combines contemporary luxury with modernist charm. Each suite will transport you back to an era of artistic splendour without sacrificing present day comforts. And, if we’re talking about travelling through time, you’ll be interested to know that the Nivia Born Boutique Hotel building was once the original headquarters of Iberia, the Spanish airline company, and it still retains certain details from the world of aviation today that give it a special character.
Discover modernist Palma
Do you have a couple of hours to venture out and explore the modernist beauty of Palma? Then you can’t miss out on the following tour, which includes some buildings that bear the signature of the masters Gaudí and Domènech and Montaner.
The walk begins at the former Círculo Mallorquín (now the Parliament), with its decorated windows and capitals. A few steps away, you can admire Can Corbella, in neo-Mudejar style, with wooden columns and stained glass windows that will undoubtedly capture your attention.
Then continue on the route towards the Paraire Building, with its unique geometric decoration and wrought iron balconies, before reaching Can Roca, famous for its ornamental ceramics.
In Plaça del Mercat, the buildings Can Casasayas and Pensión Menorquina will surprise you with their undulating façades, reminiscent of Barcelona’s Casa Batlló. Right next door, on the Place Weyler, a jewel of art-nouveau awaits you: the Grand Hotel, with its fascinating sculptures, balustrades and polychrome ceramics. In the same square, the exterior decoration of the iconic Forn del Teatre is outstanding.
Continue on to Can Forteza Rey and Almacenes El Águila, where the colourful ceramics and winding balconies will catch your eye. On the street called Carrer Colom, the Antigua Casa de las Medias displays beautiful trencadís mosaics and plant mouldings.
Can Coll, near the Lonja, with its wrought-iron balconies and sculpted plant motifs, is also a must. However, first we recommend a stop at the Cathedral, renovated by Gaudí. Miquel Barceló’s large mural is also sure to impress you.
